"PawPaw Ezell"
Daniel Allen Ezell
Born July 27, 1915 in Atmore, Alabama.
Died December 23, 1988 in Hammond, Louisiana.
Son of Daniel Asberry Ezell and Americus Marcella (Harrison) Ezell.
PawPaw was known as "Allen" formally, or "Red" among his friends. (He had red hair.)
"MawMaw Ezell"
Annie Matil (Jarrell) Ezell
Born December 6, 1919 in Pine, Louisiana.
Died July 9, 2009 in Hammond, Louisiana.
Daughter of John David Jarrell and Mary Canizer (Rester) Jarrell.
Allen and Matil had 6 children. The 1940 census lists Allen A. Ezell and shows that he was married to Matil and had two children. (The second child was born after April 1, 1940, which was the cut-off date for the census. That's why her name is marked out.) The family lived next door to Matil's parents and siblings in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana.

My Great-Great Grandparents
"Great-great-grandpa Ezell"
Jacob Ezell
Born about 1852 in Georgia.
Died December 2, 1922 in Excel, Alabama.
I think he may be the son of Samuel Ezell, but I haven't found his mother's name.
"Great-great-grandma Ezell"
Nancy Ann James
Born about 1847 in Alabama.
I don't know when she died, but I'm pretty sure she is dead.
I haven't been able to find out who her parents are. Family tradition claims she was related to the infamous outlaw Jesse James, but I have researched that line thoroughly and find no connection. There is a James surname message board and, come to find out, just about everyone with the last name of James has some sort of rumor that they are related to the outlaw. My question is, "Why?" Why would you want to claim you were related to an outlaw, for cryin' out loud, if you really weren't?
Jacob Ezelle and N. A. James were married on June 30, 1871 in Itawamba County, Mississippi. That is several years after the birth date of their son, Daniel Asberry Ezell, but we all know that sometimes births occur before the marriage of the parents. It is also possible that a mistake might have been made on the death certificate, as the information for that was dictated by Daniel Asberry Ezell's daughter some 85 years after his birth. I had no proof linking this couple to "our" Daniel, but it was the only Jacob Ezell (of any spelling) that I found who was not already connected to some other family, and who was married to an "N. James" so I suspect this might be "our" Jacob and Nancy.
Now we find Jacob and Nancy Ezel living in Colbert County, Alabama during the 1880 census. This must sure be the same Jacob and N. A. Ezelle who were married in Itawamba County, Mississippi nine years previously, as Itawamba County is just across the Mississippi/Alabama state line from Colbert County.
1880. Colbert County, Alabama.
Notice the age of Daniel in the census would make him born in 1872 (after his parents' marriage-- and 8 years later than the date listed on his death certificate), but sister Dovey would've been born in 1868 before the marriage. Lots of inconsistencies to give us hints or lead us on a wild goose chase, one! Again, I have no proof that this family is actually our line other than the names, dates, and location seem close enough to what we know to fit.

- Jacob Ezel, age 28, birthplace: Georgia, occupation: woodchopper, parents both born in South Carolina.
- Nancy Ezel, wife, age 33, birthplace: Alabama, occupation: housekeeper, parents both born in Virginia.
- Dovey Ezel, daughter, age 12, birthplace: Alabama (but then it lists father's birthplace as Georgia, and mother's birthplace as Virginia, as do both her brothers, so possibly Nancy's birthplace above listed as Alabama is a mistake.)
- Daniel Ezel, son, age 8, birthplace: Alabama.
- Sam Ezel, son, age 5, birthplace: Alabama.

"Great-great-great-grandpa Ezell"
Samuel Ezell.
Born between 1809 and 1815 in South Carolina.
Died after the 1880 census.
I think his parents may have been Ephraim Ezell and Martha (Harris) Ezell.
"Great-great-great-grandma Ezell"
I have not been able to find out what her name was.
I think she may have died between 1840 and 1860, when her family was still young.
Based on the 1840 census for Spartanburg, South Carolina, my speculation is that they were married some time before 1840. Census records prior to 1850 did not list family members' names... only the head of the household and how many males and females in each age bracket.
1840. Spartanburg, South Carolina.
I have been unable to find the census record for this family for 1850. I suspect they lived in Georgia in 1850, as the 1860 census records indicate that children were born in Georgia in about 1848 and 1850.
1860. Sugar Valley, Gordon County, Georgia.
Again, speculating... I think Samuel was widowed by this time, but his aged and poverty-stricken parents (Ephraim and Martha) lived with him and his children. I have no proof that Ephraim and Martha were his parents, but it seems logical, since they were living with him.
I also think that the census taker had no idea how to spell "Ezell" and it sounded like "Israel" to him, so that's what he wrote down!
Based on the 1870 census, it looks like Samuel married a lady named Hannah and had 3 more children with her between 1860 and 1870. (I have seen notes on the internet that Hannah's maiden name was Craft.) They moved to Alabama sometime in the late 1860s.
1870. Marion County, Alabama.
I wonder who Abi Bailey was? Maybe Hannah's sister? Probably not, if Hannah's maiden name was Craft. Or perhaps a hired girl?
1880. Winston County, Alabama.
Funny how Samuel is only 4 years older in 1880 than he was in 1870!

Born 1792 in South Carolina.
Served in the War of 1812.
Died May 11, 1861 in possibly Georgia.
Parents James and Anne Ezell.

Martha Harris
Born about 1790 in South Carolina.
Death date and place unknown.
Parents unknown.
Married April 15, 1814 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
Ephraim is a descendant of the immigrant Timothy Ezell and most records only list 3 children for him: John, Levi, and Lundy. Census records indicate that he had more children than that, but they are the pre-1850 records that don't list names. My theory is that one of the unnamed sons was Samuel because, according to the 1860 census, Ephraim and Martha lived with Samuel Ezell and his family as an old man. It's possible Samuel was not a son, but that doesn't seem likely to me.
1820 Census. Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Ephraim Ezell
3 males under 10
2 females under 10
2 persons engaged in agriculture
1830 Census. Greenville, South Carolina.
Isreal, Ephraim

2 males 10-15
1 male 50-60
1 female under 5
1 female 5-10
1 female 10-15
1 female 30-40
An alternate spelling for Ephraim is "Euphram."
I also found Ephraim Ezell in the War of 1812 Service Records. He was in the "1 Reg't (Means') South Carolina Militia." (I have no idea what that signifies!) He was a private.

Date of death unknown, but he probably died in South Carolina.
Son of Timothy and Anne Ezell.

Date and place of birth and death unknown.
Parents unknown.
James and Anne had 12 children. Nine daughters (whose names are unknown), and three sons: Ephraim, James, and Samuel.
James moved to South Carolina from Virginia sometime in the 1790s. He lived on Pacolet River near Parris Bridge. He was a shoemaker by trade.
James Ezell, Sr. is not listed in the 1790 census of South Carolina. But in Deed Bk C, p. 351, Union County Court House, Union, South Carlina, there is recorded a deed dated 1791, where in James Ezell sold a tract of land on Fair Forest, Buffalo Creek. This indicates he had brought the land either earlier in that year or soon after the 1790 census of South Carolina was taken.
The oldest records of deeds in Spartanburg County, South Carolina records a deed dated in 1808 in which James Ezell sold 100 acres of land on Pacolet River to James Scott.

"...for and in consideration of the natural love and affection I have and bear toward my loving daughter Mary Horton, of the same place, both given, granted and confirmed unto said Mary Horton and her heirs, a certain piece of land containing about 183 acres". Signed Timothy Ezell, 16 April 1761.
- Anne received a feather bed and furniture, a copper kettle, and "15 pounds current money." (Seems like she got the short end of the stick? Or probably values were different then than they are now?)
- Timothy was to receive the family land and plantation when he reached the age of 21. He was about 12 when his father's will was made.
- James was to receive the land and plantation "lying on the lower end of the swamp, commonly called Joan's Hole Swamp" when he reached the age of 21. He was about 10 when his father's will was made.
- Timothy's wife, Anne, was to receive all the rest of the estate, whatever that was.

Timothy Ezell (also spelled Issall, Essell, Issell, Issel, Izzel, Ezard, Essall, Israell in various documents of the time) was born about 1630 in Scroby, Nottinghamshire,England. He came to America with a Captain Canfield and paid for his passage with land in Virginia. There are land records to indicate that Timothy immigrated to Surry, Virginiasome time before January 4, 1652.
Timothy married Mary de Torres. They had at least three sons: George, Michael, and Timothy, Jr. There are old wills that prove that Timothy was the father of Timothy, Jr. and his brother Michael. Since Timothy, Sr. was the first of his name in Virginia and was inSurry County for at least fifteen years prior to the time when any other Ezells appear in Surry records, it seems logical to assume that George Ezell was also his son, probably an older son. Another reason to assume that George was the son of Timothy, Sr. is because George named his second son Timothy, probably for his father.
Timothy died on March 4, 1695. He had no lands, but his estate included 3 cows and calves, 4 barren cows, 3 steers, 6 heifers, 1 yearling, 2 horses, 32 head of hogs, 1 negro woman and child, 47 pounds of new pewter, 61 pounds of old pewter, 2 feather beds, parcel of clothes, 1 bed and furniture, 1 kettle and skillet, 3 iron pots, 11 chares, 1 couch, 1 table, 2 spinning wheels, parcel of lumber, 4 chests, 2 trunks, 1 pestle and mortar, 2 guns, 1 pistol, 1 sword, 1 pair hand irons, 1 pair tongs, 2 spits, 1 frying, 1 spade, 1 drawing knife, 1 handsaw, parcel of lumber, 2 saddles with bridles, parcel of ropes, parcel of books, 2 pr. wool cards, 4 bottles, 3 old bedsteads, parcel of cotton, 1 hat brush, 1 old cart and wheels and a small grindstone.
